Pru East NADMO and Ghana Navy Educate Yeji Residents on Life Jacket Use and Water Safety

The Pru East District Secretariat of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), in collaboration with the Ghana Navy, has organized a sensitization exercise for residents of Yeji and surrounding communities on the proper use of life jackets and water safety on the Volta Lake.

The exercise was held as part of activities to mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction under the theme “Fund Resilience, Not Disaster.” It brought together boat operators, fisherfolk, and community members who depend on the lake for transportation and livelihood.

Speaking at the event, the Pru East District NADMO Director, Ms. Sandra Dua, emphasized the urgent need to reduce fatalities on the lake, especially during the rainy season when water travel becomes more dangerous. She urged lake users to adopt safety practices, particularly the consistent use of life jackets.

The Ghana Navy led practical demonstrations on the correct use of life jackets and basic rescue techniques. The team was led by CPO1 Mohammed Koblaje, who stressed the importance of regular safety drills and strict compliance with lake transport regulations.

The Member of Parliament for the Pru East Constituency, Hon. Emmanuel Kweku Boam, expressed appreciation to NADMO and the Ghana Navy for the initiative and called on fishermen and commercial boat operators to prioritize life jacket usage to help prevent avoidable loss of lives on the Volta Lake.
