Members of the Pru East District Assembly have successfully completed a two-day customised Certificate Course on Next Generation Local Governance Leadership, aimed at enhancing their leadership capacity and deepening their understanding of their roles and responsibilities within Ghana’s local governance system.
The training, held from Monday, 13th July to Tuesday, 14th July 2026, formed part of a nationwide capacity-building programme organised by the Government of Ghana through the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA) and the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG).
The programme was designed to strengthen participants’ knowledge of decentralisation and local governance while equipping them with practical leadership, communication and community mobilisation skills. It also provided an opportunity for Assembly Members to reflect on strategies for improving their performance and advancing their leadership careers.

Participants included elected and appointed Assembly Members, the District Chief Executive (DCE), the Presiding Member and the District Coordinating Director (DCD) of the Pru East District Assembly.
The training was facilitated by resource persons from the Institute of Local Government Studies, namely Mr. Peter Maala, Mr. Solomon Boakye Duah and Miss Valarie Mensah.
Opening the programme, the District Chief Executive for Pru East, Hon. Dauda Abdul Nassir, warmly welcomed the facilitators and participants to the district. He urged Assembly Members to actively participate throughout the two-day training, stressing that the knowledge and skills they would acquire would deepen their understanding of local governance, strengthen their capacity to effectively perform their responsibilities, and enable them to contribute more meaningfully to the development of their electoral areas, the Pru East District and Ghana as a whole.

Participants were taken through various modules, including decentralisation and local governance laws, corporate governance and oversight responsibilities, representative functions of Assembly Members, deliberative functions and meeting procedures, the making and enforcement of by-laws, executive mandates of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, leadership, community mobilisation and leadership change-making projects. The sessions combined lectures, case studies, discussions, questions and answers, and practical learning activities.
The training is expected to improve the capacity of Assembly Members to effectively perform their deliberative, legislative, representative, executive and oversight responsibilities. It also sought to strengthen accountability, strategic thinking, ethical leadership, effective communication and inclusive decision-making to support sustainable local development.

At the closing ceremony, the Presiding Member of the Pru East District Assembly, Mr. Awudi Godwin, expressed appreciation to the facilitators for the valuable knowledge and practical guidance they had shared during the training. He said the programme had enhanced the capacity of Assembly Members and expressed confidence that they would apply the knowledge gained to promote development within their respective electoral areas. He also thanked the Member of Parliament for the Pru East Constituency, the District Chief Executive and the District Coordinating Director for their support and commitment in ensuring the successful organisation of the programme in the district.
Speaking on behalf of the District Chief Executive, the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Kaleem Abdallah Adam, thanked participants for their commitment, patience and active participation throughout the training. He encouraged them to apply the knowledge and skills they had acquired in the performance of their duties by working closely with their communities to promote development and improve local governance.

The knowledge and skills gained through the programme are expected to enable Assembly Members to better represent their communities, strengthen public participation in local governance, improve accountability and contribute meaningfully to planning and development initiatives across the Pru East District.
The Pru East District Assembly remains committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen the capacity of Assembly Members and promote effective, accountable andinclusive local governance for the benefit of all residents.
The training has equipped Assembly Members with enhanced leadership, communication and governance skills to better represent their communities, promote accountability, mobilise residents for development and improve service delivery across the Pru East District.
